"Poster" c. Jeri Lawson 2013 All Rights ReservedA core belief is a decision that you have made about yourself, or your life, on a subconscious level that becomes dominant and repetitive.

We are often acting from these decisions, these beliefs, without even realizing it. Just becoming conscious of a core belief can release you from limiting habitual patterns and make a HUGE difference in the choices you make in your life.

A core belief may be:

“I Am Not Good Enough”

“I Am Unlovable”

“Relationships Are Not Safe.”

After a Healing Touch session, one client told me she realized that she believed “If I Don’t Succeed, I Will Die.” It was then clear to her why she had so much fear in her work environment and making changes in her career.

Even though many clients have uncovered core beliefs in their Healing Touch and Reiki sessions, I have found Clarity Breathwork to be the most potent and effective modality for bringing light to any unconscious beliefs that are blocking your vital energy.

The first core belief I uncovered in my initial series of Clarity Breath sessions was “Life is Hard.” When this came up during my breathe with Clarity Breathworker Maggie Ostara, she asked me to repeat the affirmation “Life is not hard.”

I could not even say those words out loud. Every fiber in my body knew life was hard, even though before that moment I had not been aware of it.

Maggie saw how embedded this belief was in my psyche, so she asked me, “Are you willing to believe life is not hard?”

I was willing.

I realized I knew many people who operated very successfully from the understanding that life was not hard for them. So for weeks after that breathe, every time I felt myself feeling that life was hard, I thought to myself “I am willing to believe that life is not hard.”

It worked.

I now live my life from a place that is not hard and that was 8 years ago. I still work quite a bit, and there are challenging moments, but life feels like it just flows now. This was a huge shift from how I used to operate in the world. It was a great healing.

I recently held space for a woman who discovered and released a core belief that healed her body of headaches. Here is part of what she wrote me afterward:

“In my last breath session with Jeri, she helped me get to a new layer of a core limiting belief before the session even began. During the breath session, I saw the events in my life that had set & re-triggered core limiting beliefs. I watched them as if I was a purely compassionate being watching a movie. I had the distance to realize that within the pattern were things I hadn’t noticed before that were causing me physical illness. I then worked to balance my body and align my chakras. Jeri helped guide that process by releasing tension in my shoulders and neck. Energy flowed through my body in a way it hasn’t in years.

I released the personal pain surrounding the pattern (forgave) and was able to see the pain from a general, human perspective.

The day after the session and since I’ve felt more energized, my mind is calmer, I’m sleeping better, my personal interactions are richer and even difficult communication is not strained. The headaches I’ve been having on and off for years are definitely more “off”, in fact, I’ve only had one show-stopping headache since the breathe and it only lasted for 20 minutes! Generally speaking, I’ve had show-stopping headaches that lasted weeks.”

Level III Animal Reiki Teacher Training Class November 2015

Level III Animal Reiki Teacher Training Class November 2015

Being an energetic practitioner is a constantly evolving journey. The energy is always guiding me.  Often I find many techniques that have worked so well in the past just fall away as new awareness arises.

In my practice now, I feel a deepening of the work, of the sacred space, how connected everything really is. “I” feel I am doing less, and my clients are receiving more.

This shift has led me to the teachings of Kathleen Prasad. After watching her YouTube videos and reading her books, I decided to attend her three-day Animal Reiki Teacher Training last weekend.

What is Animal Reiki?

Here is a quote from her website answering that very question:

“Animal Reiki is a spiritual practice of compassion for all beings. In a nutshell, “doing” Reiki for animals simply means learning to meditate with your animals. The practices of Reiki help us navigate our life’s challenges with grace and surrender while we learn to listen to and be present for others in a compassionate space. Compassion is the ultimate healer.”

IMG_2170Kathleen’s classes are unique in her emphasis on traditional Japanese Reiki techniques integrated into Animal Reiki practice. Kathleen is passionate about Reiki, connecting with animals, and she is a gifted teacher. I found her constantly evolving journey with her Reiki practice very validating and life-affirming.

There is so much I took away from this class (but not the kitten in the photo, thank god). Let me just say for now that if you are interested in animals, Reiki, or meditation, I recommend that you put a Reiki class from Kathleen on your bucket list. Make it your number one item.

IMG_2183The Reiki Workshop was held at BrightHaven Holistic Animal Retreat in Santa Rosa, California. There is so much love at BrightHaven; I feel so good just being there. During the class I was able to share Reiki with the cows – Buttercup and her baby, as well as chickens, pigs and Odie the goose!

This workshop has opened the door to a new level of healing within myself. What this means for my energy work will unfold in the next few months. For now, I will sum up this post with a quote by Kathleen:

“In the energetic space of healing all possibilities exist.”  – Kathleen Prasad Co-Founder SARA – Shelter Animal Reiki Association

IMG_0321I have clients who come for regular healing sessions. Some come once a month, some every two or three months, and some people sign up for a short series of healings when they need support during a challenging time.

It’s so easy to get caught up in habitual energy patterns, and let old emotional and mental behaviors run our busy lives. A healing often has the effect of hitting a reset button. After a session, clients report feeling grounded, refreshed and back in their creative flow.

Signs that you are stuck in repetitive energy patterns are: compulsive eating, obsessive thinking, feeling powerless and low energy, lack of mental focus and even just feeling uninspired. A Healing Touch session may help you deeply relax and experience a profound peace that can realign your nervous system, release emotional blocks and jump-start your energy flow.

A peaceful, cohesive energy system makes it so much easier to access deeper intuition, personal guidance and creativity.

I have to add here that if a client is really out of balance, he or she may feel a little spacey right after a healing session. It may take a few hours for their system to adjust to the healing. This is often the case with jet lag, especially after returning from a vacation from halfway around the world. Afterwards, clients report feeling so much more grounded and clear with a faster time-zone adjustment.

Energy is a tangible. You can see it, feel it, and use it daily to bring more flow, balance and creativity into your life.

This is what I wanted 20 students to experience when I spoke to a class called Art and Meditation at UC Berkeley last week.

I have been a guest speaker in this class for the last ten years, and it just gets more interesting every year. Speaking as an Energetic Practitioner/Healer, I lead two meditations, show the students how to see energy, how to feel energy, and most importantly, how to have fun doing it.

Fun is the key to becoming more aware of energy, especially in an academic environment. If you try too hard, it’s almost impossible to see an aura.

Take my word for this, I spent years trying too hard. I find it quite amazing that I can now show 20 people in a few minutes how to do something that took me years to figure out.

Maybe being a slow learner makes you a better teacher.

As I have written before in my blog, learning to see energy and auras did not make me a better healer. Seeing and feeling energy fields does help make energy more REAL to someone who is first being introduced to the concept. You can talk about energy all you want, but when you see or feel it, it’s a whole new paradigm.

The class is in Kroeber Hall. In a room without windows that has the perfect lighting for seeing energy fields. If I was giving this talk somewhere else, I am not sure I would even address seeing auras.

Every year, almost every student in the class sees the first layer of the aura, the layer that often looks like a light white-blue glow around the body. Many students say they have already seen this light around people, they just didn’t realize it was part of our biofield.

Feeling the energy is easier than seeing it. I have noticed most people are more kinesthetic, rather than visual perceivers, when it comes to experiencing energy. When everyone in the class partners up and begins to “feel” their partner’s aura, it’s an exciting moment.

Art and Meditation is my dream class. It is taught by Artists Azin Seraj and Professor Katherine Sherwood. Here is part of the class description:

Meditation is arguably the most ancient, powerful, and yet simple spiritual practice in the world. It is known in various forms in nearly all times and cultures, and plays a part in every religious tradition. This experimental workshop will examine how meditation can affect your art both in terms of practice and content.

Part of the incredible reading list is A New Earth by Eckhart Tolle and  The Field by Lynne McTaggart. They also watch the film Divine Horsemen: The Living Gods of Haiti by Maya Deren and present the work of Emma Kunz.

OMG, I wish I had this course in college.

Thank you Katherine and Azin, for creating such an incredible class.

Version 2

The Healing Touch Community in the East Bay is very committed to supporting the Veterans. One of the ways we give back to the Vets is bringing Healing Touch to the Stand Downs.

Stand Downs are held all across the country. They are one to three-day events that provide services to homeless veterans. They provide food, Social Security benefits counseling, shelter, clothes, haircuts, Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, various health screenings, and much more. Often there is also massage, Chiropractic treatments and, as you might have guessed, Healing Touch available.

Last Saturday, I participated in the Stand Down on The Delta at the Contra Costa Fairgrounds. Here is a link to an article in the Contra Costa Times that gives you an idea of what the Delta Stand Down was like.

The whole event was so well organized. I just love that. Our Healing Touch coordinators are beyond amazing. There must have been twenty emails preparing us for the event. We had all the information we needed: directions to the grounds, where to park, where to get our shirt and badge, what to wear, what to bring, good snack suggestions – we were prepared!

Being in a healing space from 9 to 5 was quite extraordinary, as well as intense, and all that preparation came in handy. The coordinators were always on patrol in the Healing Touch tent, encouraging us to take breaks, eat snacks, stay hydrated and take good care of ourselves.

The healing sessions lasted about 30 minutes, and on Saturday, the day I volunteered, there were about nine healers. Some Healing Touch Practitioners signed up for both days.

It is wonderful to do healing work in a group. Even though the sessions were one- on-one, it felt like we were all working together. It was an incredibly loving, healing, and supportive environment for the Veterans.

Healing Touch Coordinator Suzanne Mittica wrote:

“I am always amazed at the generosity of spirit, the unstinting extension of personal skills of just darn nice people who volunteer for the many tasks of a successful Stand Down. It doesn’t matter what role we play in the rest of our life, we become the many with one purpose: to show the vets someone cares.”

I would like to thank Healing Touch Practitioners and Stand Down Co-coordinators Nancy Khlafallah and Suzanne Mittica. They spent the last year getting this event organized. Also thank you to Assistant Coordinator Cindy Durant and Helper Maryanne Mitchell.

I posted this video on how beneficial Healing Touch can be for Veterans once before, but it is such a good video, I had to post it again. I can’t link it directly from my blog, so after you click on the video box, then just click the word “YouTube” at the bottom of the video. That will take you right to a YouTube video you can easily watch. This video pretty much sums up why I volunteer at Stand Down:

Equine Reiki Training July 25th, 2015

Last July, I attended Kathleen Prasad’s Equine Reiki Training.

I first learned about Kathleen’s work via YouTube. I found a video of Kathleen doing Reiki in a shelter full of dogs. Her simple approach to Reiki is a welcome bridge between my studies in non-duality, my healing practice, and my life in general. There are moments on my spiritual path where I can’t tell if my meditation practice is deepening or dissolving. Reiki with animals puts me in a space where all that doesn’t seem to matter.

Since discovering Animal Reiki, I have watched Kathleen’s videos and read most of her books and online articles. I have given her book “Reiki For Dogs” (which is brilliant) to many of my friends and clients. I took her email correspondence course, The Animal Reiki Workshop: Core Curriculum, and during that course, I found and adopted my dog, Berkeley.

Berkeley loves Reiki

So you can imagine how excited I was to attend her Equine Reiki Training.

The class was held at BrightHaven, which is a Sanctuary and Hospice for senior and special needs animals. It is a typical ranch style house in Santa Rosa filed with cats, dogs, chickens, horses, two goldfish, a pig and a goat. There was so much love in that house I felt like I was sitting in a temple. I consider it one of the most sacred spaces that I have ever entered.

Richard Pope is a Director and one of the Founders of BrightHaven, and he was at the workshop sharing his wealth of stories about the animal residents as well as taking groups of us to the horse pastures.

Kathleen donates half of her workshop fees to BrightHaven.

I work with Reiki every day, but sharing Reiki with a 1000 pound animal was an experience that took me completely out of my element. It was more profound than I had anticipated. The first horse’s attraction to the energy was so strong he backed me into a tree; he really liked the Reiki. I was surprised by how emotionally (and physically!) moved I was by interacting with the animals.

The stories Kathleen told throughout the day were educational as well as totally fascinating. She shared the pivotal experiences that taught her how to be Reiki with the animals. Her understanding of animals, healing and life is priceless.

Below is a quote from Kathleen’s blog post: 5 Things You Need To Know about Animal Reiki Today

“Reiki teaches us to be compassionate to ourselves and to others. Ultimately, there is no difference, since all is One. It is this Oneness space that Reiki helps us to tap into with its many tools. When we are with our animals, we can often touch this space, feeling our hearts merge with our animals’ hearts. These moments are so profoundly moving. We can often see a wonderful healing response arising naturally from these compassionate moments.”

I felt this “wonderful healing response” arise in me. The horses appeared to like it too.

If my clients have driven a long way to get to my office, I sometimes give them a short tour of the garden. A little moment of nature before a healing is often the perfect transition from road to healing table.

I’ve been reading and thinking about Flow.

What is Flow?

To use Jason Silva’s descriptions from the first video below, it’s that state in which time slows down or speeds up, self vanishes, action and awareness merge. Flow is an effortless state that silences our inner critic.

Abraham Maslow called Flow “a peak experience.” In the 1970s, James Fixx described Flow as “a runner’s high.” Los Angeles Lakers’ coach Phil Jackson calls it “being in the zone” and Miles Davis spoke of it as “being in the pocket.”

As a healer, I call Flow “sacred space”. Sacred space is where healer and client become one, where there is no time, where the more “I” get out of the way, the more effective the session.

I find it fascinating to see how other people are experiencing Flow and how powerful this state is. In the second video, Jamie Wheal tells the story of how his first Flow experience changed him: “I was different. I found what I had been seeking; I was home for the first time in my life.”

Jamie Wheal and Steven Kotler are Co-founders of the Flow Genome Project. Their website states:

“Flow states are now known to optimize performance, enhance creativity, drive innovation, accelerate learning, amplify memory and underpin happiness itself.”

It’s all quite interesting, and I wonder:

Are Healers really Flow Hackers?

It’s been awhile since I posted some music for healing work. I just found a fantastic CD that was released in 2000. Why did it take me so long to find it? I’ve been playing this music almost every day for the last few weeks.

In my healing practice, the music I select for each treatment is an important part of establishing the frequency or sacred space, of the session. For me, music also keeps that space grounded in “real-time” as the healing unfolds on whatever level the client needs.
